The American cult of motherhood requires that women sublimate all their adult needs and potential to an endless act of sacrifice for their child. We do not have the same unspoke expectation of fathers. Why would we want to make our women into servants as apposed to allowing them the time and space to be fully rounded human beings? Most husbands don't really want this. They want the interesting woman they married. But our society runs on the unvalued free labor of women. Until we fix tha, we will continually be fighting to find a bit of space and time to keep our adult lives alive.
